Detained workers could be heard on the soccer field behind the prison walls, shouting in Spanish: \u201c<em>\u00a1Libertad!<\/em>\u201d (Freedom!)<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/?p=103\">The Poetics of Malcolm X<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since May <span>22<\/span>, <span>300<\/span> of them are on a\u00a0work stoppage and hunger strike. Over video chat, one worker told the crowd outside that they had stopped eating and working for as little as $<span>1<\/span> an hour (or no pay at all) to demand an improvement in their living conditions. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>But that\u2019s not all we demand,\u201d he said. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We are also doing this to demand freedom. We\u2019re not treated like people. We\u2019re treated like\u00a0animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>The hunger strikers are demanding to meet with the governor, the release of young and elderly detainees and all medically vulnerable people, and ultimately, freedom for\u00a0all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For months, a\u00a0group of activists with the ICE Out of NJ coalition, which includes the immigrant rights group Cosecha, the Catholic advocacy group Pax Christi, and the worker center New Labor, has been protesting outside Delaney Hall, a\u00a0<span>1<\/span>,<span>000<\/span>-bed privately owned detention center where immigrants, mostly Latino, are jailed without due\u00a0process.<\/p>\n<p>Families and lawyers of the detainees report that Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and guards with the GEO Group, the private-prison contractor, have been denying them medical care, offering them food swarming with worms, and refusing them bail bond or access to their lawyers. Many were snatched from construction job sites, or still wearing their service-industry work clothes; others were taken while reporting at courthouses for green-card\u00a0appointments.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-132\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f29d36bd38dbdf7662facc730026bf44-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f29d36bd38dbdf7662facc730026bf44-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f29d36bd38dbdf7662facc730026bf44-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f29d36bd38dbdf7662facc730026bf44-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/f29d36bd38dbdf7662facc730026bf44.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<div>Violent ICE agents spray protesters with chemicals outside of Delaney Hall in May 2026.  <span>Photo by Adam Gray\/Getty Images<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>In our cases, we had already been processed, we were complying with legal requirements, and there was no order from a\u00a0judge for our detention or arrest,\u201d wrote a\u00a0worker identified as Brian in a\u00a0handwritten letter in early May, co-signed by <span>300<\/span> others with redacted names, pleading for help from elected officials. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>ICE officers did not take into account the fact that there was already an immigration court date, and they arrested us during check-in appointments at USCIS [U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services]\u00a0facilities.\u201d<br\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>FROM SCARCE FOOD TO NONE<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They struck because they wanted to hit their jailers\u2019 bottom line, but they were already going without food, and their health has further\u00a0deteriorated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>People aren\u2019t eating because of the strike we are organizing and there\u2019s no medical assistance,\u201d said a\u00a0released hunger striker named Luis to <em>Radio Jornalera<\/em> (Day Laborer Radio). Speaking with his back to the camera to conceal his identity for fear of retaliation by ICE, Luis said another detainee had become severely dehydrated and couldn\u2019t walk. Food was already scarce or inedible, even before the\u00a0strike.<br\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>When hunger strikers sought medical help at the nursing center in the prison, \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>they wouldn\u2019t lend us the wheelchair,\u201d Luis said. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We had to put in our own pills, give our own liquids with sugar and a\u00a0little salt to compensate for electrolytes.\u201d He said there has been no due process for the detentions; he was detained by ICE during a\u00a0routine check-in, which doesn\u2019t normally occur for people who have a\u00a0legal case going through the immigration system. Santiago\/Getty Images<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>If they freed us, we wouldn\u2019t generate profit for this business,\u201d Luis told the\u00a0Guardian.<\/p>\n<p>Nationwide, the majority of imprisoned immigrants through <span>2025<\/span> had no criminal records. As the <em>American Prospect<\/em> has reported, the GEO Group is raking in record profits with a\u00a0federal contract valued at $<span>1<\/span> billion. Some of these profits come from imprisoned immigrants working for little or no pay. Workers report they are coerced into participating in the government\u2019s supposedly Voluntary Work Program through solitary confinement and other forms of\u00a0torture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The <span>13<\/span><sup>th<\/sup> Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery, with an asterisk: \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>except as a\u00a0punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.\u201d Convicted or not, all labor has value. But what\u2019s doubly wrong is that immigrants in ICE jails haven\u2019t even been convicted, and are being denied due\u00a0process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>VIOLENT RETALIATION<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In what activists are calling retaliation, on May <span>28<\/span> the GEO guards and ICE agents responded to the hunger strike and work stoppage with beatings. The guards took them to their cells. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>And then there were the prisoners banging on the doors to please let them out,\u201d Fuentes said. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>My husband says there was blood in the floor and in the walls that clearly the agents now were cleaning up because they knew they messed\u00a0up.\u201d<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/?p=99\">The Death Squads Hunting Environmental Defenders<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0statement, Fuentes said that she bolted to the prison to speak out about what was happening inside. When she got there, she saw that \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>one of the guys was taken by the ambulance because a\u00a0guard broke his\u00a0nose.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials said agents responded to \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>a physical fight involving detainees at Delaney Hall.\u201d Homeland Security Secretary Markwyane Mullin has upped the ante, threatening to retaliate against sanctuary cities by pulling Customs and Border Protection officers from\u00a0airports.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the strike, speaking out about conditions in the prison was met with retaliation. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We have to be very careful, everything we say and do is closely monitored, at all times,\u201d Jordi Alvarado told local news outlet <em>NJ\u200b.com<\/em> in early May. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>And then, almost as if on cue, his face abruptly disappeared from the screen of the iPhone advocates had used to call him,\u201d reported <em>NJ\u200b.com<\/em> columnist Daysi Calavia-Robertson. On the blacked-out screen, a\u00a0message popped up. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>Call paused.\u201d And shortly after, \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>Call\u00a0ended.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>OFFICIAL ACTION DEMANDED<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Local and federal elected officials have put out statements condemning the deplorable living conditions and treatment of detainees. New Jersey Sen. Andy Kim, a\u00a0Democrat, went inside the prison on May <span>25<\/span>, came out, joined the protestors, and got pepper sprayed. But the ICE Out of NJ coalition is demanding more\u00a0action.<br\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>Elected officials, the Governor, and the Attorney General cannot continue ignoring what is happening behind these walls,\u201d said Jorge Torres of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network in a\u00a0statement. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>They must enter the facility immediately, speak directly with the people, and hold GEO Group and ICE accountable for this violence.\u201d The detained immigrant workers have written three letters to legislators pleading for their release; they\u2019ve received no\u00a0reply.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>I have never thought Delaney Hall should open,\u201d said New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill at a\u00a0news conference on May <span>26<\/span>. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We had a\u00a0law here in New Jersey against privately run detention facilities. \u2026 The fact that they wouldn\u2019t let me in there gives you some sense that there is some \u200b<span>\u2018<\/span>there\u2019 there, and that\u2019s really concerning to\u00a0me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cruel impunity is as plain as day, both inside and outside the immigration detention center. On the night of May <span>27<\/span>, federal agents struck protesters with batons, pushing one into the path of a\u00a0tractor trailer wheel, a\u00a0video shows.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday after reports of assaults on detainees began circulating, some local elected officials were allowed inside the prison, but access is still limited. Santiago\/Getty Images<\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The reports often come from the families of the detained. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We\u2019ve been hearing from constituents who have family members inside, including a\u00a0mother who is being beaten by ICE agents and an <span>11<\/span>-year-old girl who spoke to her father inside who said that there are a\u00a0lot of people inside who are bloodied,\u201d U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman told <em>NJ\u200b.com<\/em> on the afternoon of May\u00a0<span>28<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>SOLIDARITY FUNDRAISERS<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Gabriela Soto\u2019s husband, Martin Soto Hernandez, was detained in January while buying diapers. He had previously been arrested for a\u00a0domestic violence incident, but the charges were later dismissed and expunged, according to his lawyers. His kids depend on him. His daughter knows he is her world. This is unfair what Trump is doing to this country. He\u2019s ripping families apart and this is not fair. Please help\u00a0us.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>At this very moment, Delaney represents a\u00a0dark and desolate world for those who sought to attain the American Dream,\u201d said Gloria Guerrero of New Labor in Spanish to <em>Labor Notes<\/em>. Guerrero organizes alongside domestic workers whose husbands have been detained in ICE prisons. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>Children wait for the return of parents detained by a\u00a0cruel and inhumane system\u2009\u2014\u2009locked in dungeons, treated like criminals, and stripped of every right, including the right to humane treatment,\u201d she\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>Yet for others, it is the greatest business venture in history\u2009\u2014\u2009one that utterly disregards the dignity of human beings. Delaney is a\u00a0Latino concentration camp where many are forced to sell themselves out of sheer necessity, shielding their faces in shame from a\u00a0community that cries out: \u200b<span>\u2018<\/span>Quit that job now! I\u00a0am your people!
