Around her, <span>11<\/span> young women sit, their stories of displacement heavy in the sweltering\u00a0air.<\/p><p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/summitrelocationtimess.com\/?p=142\">No New Beds<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>When the war came in April [<span>2023<\/span>], I\u00a0watched our mothers and sisters arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs,\u201d says Hussein, her voice a\u00a0whisper. The <span>26<\/span>-year-old graduated from Red Sea University in <span>2022<\/span>, a\u00a0year before the war began and disrupted her plans of a\u00a0traditional journalism career. She dips a\u00a0cloth in cool water and wraps it around her phone, a\u00a0technique she\u2019s perfected after countless shoots in the <span>113<\/span>-degree heat, which causes phones to shut down. The women work in the early morning, filming in whatever shade they\u00a0find.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hussein\u2019s first film, <em>Toknan<\/em> (\u201c<em>Knowledge<\/em>,\u201d in the local Beja language), tells the story of a\u00a0pioneering woman who rejected marriage to pursue education. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>I saw my own mother and sister in their faces, women who had become invisible in their own country,\u201d she reflects. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>I wasn\u2019t just a\u00a0photographer \u2026 I\u00a0was documenting survival\u00a0itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sudan\u2019s conflict began on April <span>15<\/span>, <span>2023<\/span>, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. More than <span>12<\/span> million people have been displaced and <span>21<\/span>.<span>2<\/span> million forced into acute food insecurity. According to a\u00a0November <span>2025<\/span> briefing by UN Women, \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>sexual violence, forced displacement and the collapse of essential services have transformed Sudan into the world\u2019s most extreme crisis for women and\u00a0girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The film project emerged between filmmaker Mohammed Fawi and social worker Tasabih Hegazy. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>I would see these women sitting under trees, telling the most extraordinary stories to anyone who would listen,\u201d recalls Hegazy, <span>27<\/span>. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We wanted to create space for women to tell their stories in their own\u00a0voices.\u201d<br\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The main challenge remains funding\u2009\u2014\u2009the films survive on small donations and volunteer labor. Yet constraints have fostered innovation. The films represent a\u00a0genuine new form, more intimate than traditional documentary, more immediate than conventional narrative cinema, more authentically Sudanese than anything from established film\u00a0centers.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>People think limitations crush creativity,\u201d <span>24<\/span>-year-old Malaz Habib says. She serves as photographer and sound engineer. But \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>when you can\u2019t rely on expensive equipment, you have to rely on human\u00a0connection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>We\u2019re not trying to compete with Hollywood,\u201d Hegazy explains. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We\u2019re creating something that can only exist\u00a0here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>BEYOND SURVIVAL STORIES<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Dr. Eithar Khairy, <span>29<\/span>, traded her stethoscope for a\u00a0smartphone when displacement made practicing medicine impossible. Her film <em>I\u00a0Am Here<\/em> follows Randa, a\u00a0deaf mother of five who became a\u00a0disability rights\u00a0activist.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>Randa faces injustice every day, but she\u2019s unbreakable,\u201d Khairy explains. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>I chose that title because sometimes just existing, just being present and refusing to disappear, is its own form of\u00a0resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-year-old Ikram Mohammed has been displaced three times since the war began. Ibrahim Ahmad, known as Snoopy, fled first to Wad Madani, then crossed into Kenya. From Nairobi, he\u2019s directing <em>Khartoum<\/em>, a\u00a0meditation on loss and memory that uses green screens for a\u00a0city that may no longer\u00a0exist.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>We found ourselves having to rebuild not just the story, but our entire understanding of what Sudanese cinema could be,\u201d he explains via video call, the connection cutting out. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>The war destroyed everything we thought we knew about filmmaking in Sudan\u2009\u2014\u2009the institutions, the infrastructure, the assumption that we could work in our own\u00a0country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His film employs interviews conducted remotely, archival footage and a\u00a0narrative structure that mirrors the fragmentation of\u00a0displacement.<br\/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>We\u2019re not just documenting the war,\u201d Ahmad reflects. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We\u2019re inventing new ways to remember what we\u2019ve\u00a0lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The films have also gained recognition beyond Sudan\u2019s borders. Ali Ahmed\u2019s <em>Jawabat<\/em> (\u201c<em>Answers<\/em>\u201d) explores loss and communication with the disappeared and has been featured in <span>10<\/span> film festivals, winning an award at Egypt\u2019s Luxor African Film\u00a0Festival.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>The messages [in the film] represent all the things we want to say to people we\u2019ve lost,\u201d Ahmed explains. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>They\u2019re one-sided conversations, not knowing if our words will ever reach\u00a0them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>STORIES THAT DEMAND TO BE TOLD<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>On a\u00a0recent evening, the women from the film workshop gathered to screen their latest works. The audience included other displaced women and locals, many seeing themselves reflected on screen for the first\u00a0time.<\/p>\n<p>One film follows an elderly woman teaching children to read using stones and sand. Another documents women starting a\u00a0small tea business. A\u00a0third captures quiet rituals as everything else has been stripped\u00a0away.<\/p>\n<p><span>\u201c<\/span>Every woman here has a\u00a0story that could change how people understand this war,\u201d says Hussein, her phone finally cool. \u200b<span>\u201c<\/span>We\u2019re not waiting for someone else to tell\u00a0them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As night falls, the workshop grows quiet except for soft sounds of fingers tapping screens\u2009\u2014\u2009editing, uploading, sharing.
