This summer, a\u00a0seismic wave ripped through the foundations of an ossified Democratic establishment as a\u00a0swell of left-wing challengers channeled disgust at party elites to jolt the entire political\u00a0system.\u00a0<\/p>

On June 23<\/span>, a\u00a0slate of candidates emerged victorious with endorsements and support from the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani. They toppled longtime incumbents and added fuel to the economic populist electoral movement that has been sweeping the\u00a0country.<\/p>\n

Union organizer Claire Valdez won a\u00a0race for an open seat in New York\u2019s 7<\/span>th<\/sup> District, encompassing swaths of Brooklyn and Queens, by more than 20<\/span> points while community activist Darializa Avila Chevalier took out Adriano Espaillat in NY-13<\/span>, in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, and former comptroller Brad Lander (endorsed by Mamdani but not DSA) beat out Rep. Dan Goldman in NY-10<\/span>, in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, by more than 30<\/span>\u00a0points.\u00a0<\/p>\n

All three are set to head to Congress in their heavily Democratic districts, which, along with other recent DSA primary wins, would double the ranks of democratic socialists in the\u00a0House.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And it wasn\u2019t just federal races that saw socialists triumph\u2009\u2014\u2009DSA-backed candidates won across the state and local levels, with the results sending shockwaves through the corridors of power. As a\u00a0Fox News chyron blared: \u200b\u201c<\/span>SOCIALISTS WINNING\u00a0EVERYWHERE.\u201d<\/p>\n

At a\u00a0victory party for DSA-backed candidates in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, Mamdani reflected on his own shock primary win last June, saying: \u200b\u201c<\/span>A year ago, it was not the end of a\u00a0political movement\u2009\u2014\u2009it was the\u00a0beginning.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since taking office in January, Mamdani has pursued an approach his administration calls \u200b\u201c<\/span>pothole politics\u201d\u2009\u2014\u2009a callback to the \u200b\u201c<\/span>sewer socialism\u201d of mid-20<\/span>th<\/sup> century left-wing leaders in Wisconsin who made improving the daily lives of residents and carrying out good government policies the heart of their\u00a0stewardship.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It appears to be working: a\u00a0late June Siena poll showed Mamdani\u2019s favorability in New York City standing at a\u00a0striking 58<\/span>%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

At that victory party in Brooklyn, I\u00a0watched as hundreds of canvassers, organizers and DSA members burst out in rhapsody as the candidates they spent months knocking doors and making calls for were officially called as the party\u2019s nominees. Following thunderous chants of \u200b\u201c<\/span>DSA, DSA\u201d from the crowd, Valdez declared \u200b\u201c<\/span>We haven\u2019t just won an election, we\u2019ve declared that this movement is durable, that it is growing, and that it will not stop until working people are no longer asked to just build the table, no longer just offered a\u00a0seat at the table, but run the\u00a0table.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

A week before the primary, Mamdani held a\u00a0rally at the Kings Theater in Brooklyn to hype his endorsed candidates along with Sen. Bernie Sanders, whose presidential runs helped seed this blossoming\u00a0movement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sanders asked the packed room: \u200b\u201c<\/span>Why are progressives and socialist candidates winning elections all across this country? The answer in my view is not complicated. The working class of America understands that our current economic system is rigged, that it is designed to benefit the wealthy and the\u00a0powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to cite other recent primary wins for the Left: Both Analilia Mejia, a\u00a0union organizer, and Dr. Adam Hamawy, a\u00a0surgeon who volunteered in Gaza, are likely headed to Congress from New Jersey; Graham Platner, a\u00a0Marine veteran and oyster farmer, won the Democratic nomination for Senate in Maine; Randy Villegas, an educator and auto shop owner is running as an economic populist in a\u00a0purple district in California\u2019s Central Valley; Chris Rabb is a\u00a0Pennsylvania House representative and DSA member running unopposed for Congress; and Janeese Lewis George is a\u00a0democratic socialist who will be the next mayor of Washington, D.C. <\/p>\n

These candidates are all running on a\u00a0Sanders\u2019 style agenda of universal social programs funded by taxing the rich to wrest back their hoarded\u00a0wealth.<\/p>\n

In 2024<\/span>, progressives were largely on their back foot, defending (and in some cases losing) seats they\u2019d won in previous cycles. But now the momentum has turned, as a\u00a0restive electorate is fed up with the status quo and willing to take a\u00a0chance on a\u00a0politics of redistribution and\u00a0solidarity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s fair to question whether full-on democratic socialist politics can fly in more traditionally moderate parts of the country\u2009\u2014\u2009even DSA National Co-Chair Megan Romer recently told Vox: \u200b\u201c<\/span>Predictably, our electoral victories map pretty closely onto blue cities and blue states, that\u2019s not surprising. We\u2019re not blind to this. It is something that is being worked\u00a0on.\u201d<\/p>

But what\u2019s clear is that a\u00a0message of delivering real material change to working people while opposing the U.S.-backed Israeli genocide in Palestine can build majorities and replace the hollow husk of a\u00a0gutless Democratic establishment that helped bring us a\u00a0maniacal second term of President Donald\u00a0Trump.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the hours following the results in New York, pundits and centrist Democrats expressed alarm, fearing the implications of a\u00a0U.S. socialist\u00a0upheaval.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville floated the idea of a \u200b\u201c<\/span>schism\u201d in the party, saying \u200b\u201c<\/span>there\u2019s some shit I\u00a0can\u2019t be in the same tent as.\u201d Former DNC Chair Jaime Harrison posted on X, \u200b\u201c<\/span>If you hate the Democratic Party then please don\u2019t run for our nomination \u2026 If you don\u2019t believe in the party then don\u2019t expect its members to carry you across the finish line.\u201d New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has previously supported Mamdani, warned: \u200b\u201c<\/span>All of us are a\u00a0little frustrated with the Democratic Party. But you don\u2019t blow it up. That\u2019s what MAGA has\u00a0done.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The day after the primary, Mamdani responded to some of these criticisms in an interview with MS NOW\u2019s Chris\u00a0Hayes:\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>What is the Democratic Party if not its voters? And what we saw yesterday evening were Democrats across the city turning out and voting for a\u00a0new kind of politics. And I\u2019ve been clear time and time again that I\u00a0believe the only majority in our country is that of the working class,\u201d Mamdani said. \u200b\u201c<\/span>And what we saw is that a\u00a0focus on the working class\u2009\u2014\u2009whether it\u2019s from Claire, whether it\u2019s from Darializa, whether it\u2019s Brad\u2009\u2014\u2009is what New Yorkers want to\u00a0see.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s a\u00a0defense that\u2019s hard to argue with: party leadership isn\u2019t meant to choose what Democrats want to see from their elected officials\u2009\u2014\u2009voters are. And candidates backed by corporate interests, Big Tech and AIPAC are increasingly being trounced by challengers who will name the threat of oligarchy, offer concrete solutions to the affordability crisis, oppose sending military aid to war criminals and challenge Trump\u2019s authoritarianism. Claiming that\u2019s not what the Democratic Party actually wants suggests that the whole premise of democracy might not be the apparatchiks\u2019 top\u00a0priority.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a\u00a0group of self-proclaimed moderate House Democrats released a\u00a0letter two days after the primary attempting to distance the party from the DSA-backed winners, asserting, \u200b\u201c<\/span>We are capitalist, not\u00a0socialist.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no doubt the party establishment is firmly pro-capitalist, but its base is increasingly moving in the other direction: According to a\u00a0recent CNN poll, within the Democratic coalition, democratic socialism is now more popular than sitting Democrats in Congress, and socialism is viewed far more favorably than\u00a0capitalism.\u00a0<\/p>\n

These shifts are a\u00a0testament to Sanders\u2019 campaigns and the dedicated work of DSA members who have spent years organizing to break the stranglehold of capitalism in defining the bounds of our political debate. They also reflect the fact that \u200b\u201c<\/span>the \u200b\u2018<\/span>S\u2019 word\u201d is losing its stigma and steadily being understood by the public as DSA founder Michael Harrington described it in a\u00a0February 1988<\/span> issue of In These Times<\/em>: \u200b\u201c<\/span>Socialism was conceived of as a\u00a0program of democratic socialization from below, as a\u00a0movement to put the people in control of the economic conditions which determine so much about their\u00a0lives.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some Democratic functionaries are responding to the upsurge by crying foul and demanding a\u00a0socialist expulsion from the party. Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) told CBS, \u200b\u201c<\/span>Zohran Mamdani and every other democratic socialist should create their own party because I\u00a0don\u2019t want that in my party,\u201d Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) said to CNN, \u200b\u201c<\/span>if you\u2019re a\u00a0socialist, you\u2019re not a\u00a0Democrat\u201d and former Andrew Cuomo chief of staff Melissa DeRosa called democratic socialists \u200b\u201c<\/span>parasites\u201d in a\u00a0Fox News\u00a0interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But attempting to stamp out the source of energy and enthusiasm in your political coalition is a\u00a0surefire way to ensure minority status, and further degrade the Democratic Party brand. As Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said of democratic socialists in response to such comments, \u200b\u201c<\/span>you can\u2019t tell them to get out and then in a\u00a0presidential cycle tell them they have an obligation to vote for you.\u201d Politics is, as always, a\u00a0two-way street.\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are plenty of other democratic socialist and progressive candidates running in upcoming primaries who are also rallying behind a\u00a0platform of antiwar class politics this cycle, including Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Melat Kiros in Colorado (whose primary is tonight), Cori Bush in Missouri, Justin Pearson in Tennessee and Francesca Hong, a\u00a0Milwaukee DSA-backed Wisconsin State Assembly member who has surged to the top of the pack in the race for governor. Hong tells In These Times<\/em>, \u200b\u201c<\/span>Right now, a\u00a0lot of people are asking whether democratic socialism can win outside places like New York City. People are hungry for a\u00a0politics that names the problem clearly: when corporations and billionaires control the economy, working people pay the\u00a0price.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

These campaigns are bound together by a\u00a0belief that the working class should be at the center of our politics rather than a\u00a0cabal of billionaires. And the successes already this primary season, along with potential victories down the road, could lead to the largest cohort of left-wing members of Congress in a\u00a0generation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the 2028<\/span> presidential race two years away\u2009\u2014\u2009and with Ocasio-Cortez being floated as an heir apparent to the rising democratic socialist movement\u2009\u2014\u2009the wins so far this primary season are a\u00a0clear signal that, whoever decides to run, a\u00a0lane is open for a\u00a0campaign willing to further jostle the political order from the\u00a0left.\u00a0<\/p>
