Tuesday\u2019s Democratic primary for the open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan is a\u00a0national story, and not only because Michigan and Maine are likely to determine which party controls the upper chamber of Congress come January. The race between public health official Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and four-term U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens is also a\u00a0microcosm of the struggle for the future of the Democratic Party\u2009\u2014\u2009the war of position between progressives and centrists that is playing out all over the\u00a0country.<\/p>

Last week I\u00a0went to Metro Detroit and spent a\u00a0few days talking with a\u00a0range of people about this pivotal race. I\u00a0was especially curious to explore the political dynamics in Michigan\u2019s Jewish and Black communities, two voting blocks that could prove crucial in this\u00a0contest.<\/p>\n

The outsize role of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in the race has been widely discussed: AIPAC and affiliated groups have spent nearly $30<\/span> million in support of Stevens\u2009\u2014\u2009their biggest investment ever in a\u00a0single race. And the overall spending picture is extremely lopsided, with the Stevens campaign spending 12<\/span> times more than El-Sayed\u2019s.<\/p>\n

AIPAC is, of course, hell-bent on defeating El-Sayed because of his critical stance on U.S. support for Israel. But the candidate doesn\u2019t lead with Israel-Palestine or even bring it up much. His focus is decidedly domestic, as reflected in his campaign slogan: \u200b\u201c<\/span>Money Out of Politics. Money in Your Pocket. Medicare for All.\u201d (Medicare for All has been a\u00a0signature issue for El-Sayed going back several years. It was the centerpiece of his unsuccessful 2018<\/span> run for Michigan governor, and he co-authored a \u200b\u201c<\/span>citizen\u2019s guide\u201d on the subject, published in\u00a02021<\/span>.)<\/p>\n

El-Sayed approaches Israel as a \u200b\u201c<\/span>kitchen table\u201d issue. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Israel is an affordability issue,\u201d he said in a\u00a0recent interview with the journalist Anand Giridharadas. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Maybe we should keep our money here instead of sending it there to drop bombs on people\u2019s schools or their hospitals. That\u2019s our money. \u2026 And you want to send my money over there? That\u2019s\u00a0insane.\u201d<\/p>\n

When Giridharadas noted that some have described this outlook as \u200b\u201c<\/span>America first from the left,\u201d El-Sayed responded enthusiastically. \u200b\u201c<\/span>I have no problem saying America first. Yes, America first,\u201d he said. He doesn\u2019t limit this to Israel. \u200b\u201c<\/span>I don\u2019t think Egypt should get any foreign military aid either, or Jordan or Pakistan or Saudi Arabia or the United Arab Emirates or Qatar,\u201d he recently said in a\u00a0podcast interview.<\/p>\n

What has received far less attention than AIPAC\u2019s crusade against the Egyptian American is the considerable Jewish support he enjoys in Michigan. Last week I\u00a0met with several Jewish supporters of El-Sayed\u2019s campaign in the Metro Detroit area. One of those supporters, Don Greenspon, is a\u00a076<\/span>-year-old attorney who resides in the heavily Jewish Detroit suburb of Huntington Woods. He is one of the co-founders of Jews for Abdul, a\u00a0group that pushes back on the barrage of attacks against El-Sayed. Those attacks have traction in large swaths of the Jewish community, Greenspon\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

But, he noted, the attacks tend not to focus on Israel, because El-Sayed\u2019s detractors know that his views on that subject are increasingly popular among Democrats, especially younger ones. Instead, they attack him for having the controversial leftist streamer Hasan Piker as a\u00a0surrogate. (Though support for El-Sayed actually increased after attack ads focused on\u00a0Piker.)<\/p>\n

On Sunday, Jews for Abdul joined forces with Muslims for Abdul and Women for Abdul for a\u00a0day of canvassing throughout neighborhoods in Detroit and Highland Park. They paired up into groups of two or three, with a\u00a0Jew and a\u00a0Muslim together in each group. \u200b\u201c<\/span>We canvassed together to show our solidarity with one another and to show that Abdul\u2019s campaign represents people from all religions and walks of life,\u201d Greenspon\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Jess Newman is a\u00a039<\/span>-year-old El-Sayed supporter who lives in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale and serves on the town\u2019s local school board. The issue of Israel \u200b\u201c<\/span>is holding this campaign hostage,\u201d she told me at a\u00a0coffee shop last week. Newman grew up in what she describes as a \u200b\u201c<\/span>very Zionist community\u201d in West Bloomfield, a\u00a0suburb of Detroit. She worked for AIPAC at one point and is now active with Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).<\/p>\n

The \u200b\u201c<\/span>propaganda\u201d against El-Sayed in the Jewish community, Newman said, has been so intense that it has created something of an \u200b\u201c<\/span>alternative universe\u201d in which many Jews believe, for example, that El-Sayed wants all Jews dead. Her view is the exact opposite: El-Sayed is the only person in the race \u200b\u201c<\/span>who wants to keep my people\u00a0safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was a\u00a0three-way race until one of the candidates, Mallory McMorrow, a\u00a0member of the Michigan Senate, dropped out in early July. McMorrow had positioned herself somewhere between Stevens in the center and Abdul El-Sayed on the left, but found that her campaign wasn\u2019t getting enough traction and withdrew. How McMorrow\u2019s erstwhile supporters vote in Tuesday\u2019s primary may determine the\u00a0outcome.<\/p>\n

One of those McMorrow supporters, 57<\/span>-year-old Pamela Aronson, was undecided when I\u00a0sat down with her to discuss the race a\u00a0few days ago in the Detroit suburb of Huntington Woods, where she lives. Aronson teaches sociology at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. She co-authored the 2023<\/span> book Gender Revolution: How Electoral Politics and #MeToo Are Reshaping Everyday Life<\/em> and two recent research papers on the \u200b\u201c<\/span>gender self-presentations\u201d of women candidates for\u00a0office.<\/p>\n

Aronson especially appreciated McMorrow\u2019s strong advocacy of LGBTQ+ rights. The state senator\u2019s withdrawal from the race left Aronson somewhat adrift and torn. She finds the deluge of attack ads from both Stevens and Abdul El-Sayed confounding. One such ad implied that El-Sayed was soft on antisemitism. Another accused El-Sayed of \u200b\u201c<\/span>a pattern of disrespecting women.\u201d Aronson researched the claims and found that the quotes in question were taken \u200b\u201c<\/span>completely out of context\u201d and \u200b\u201c<\/span>grasping at straws.\u201d But most of the people such ads reach \u200b\u201c<\/span>aren\u2019t going to go and look it up,\u201d she said. (Rima Mohammad, a\u00a0trustee on the Ann Arbor Public Schools Board of Education, has denounced the advertising campaign as racist and Islamophobic. \u200b\u201c<\/span>It is very anti-Muslim,\u201d she recently said on a\u00a0Michigan TV\u00a0show.)<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Aronson said there\u2019s part of her that\u2019s \u200b\u201c<\/span>ready to just vote for a\u00a0candidate because they\u2019re a\u00a0woman.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although only 14<\/span>% of Michiganders are African-American, the community comprises close to a\u00a0fifth of the state\u2019s Democratic primary voters, and polls show Haley Stevens with a\u00a0dramatic lead over Abdul El-Sayed among Black voters in Michigan. One recent poll shows 67<\/span>% of Black Democrats supporting Stevens and only 21<\/span>% supporting\u00a0El-Sayed.<\/p>

This discrepancy is typically attributed to Stevens\u2019 association with the Obama administration, in which she served as chief of staff for the U.S. Auto Rescue Task Force\u2009\u2014\u2009a particularly salient role in Michigan, where the auto industry has long loomed large. Stevens worked under \u200b\u201c<\/span>car czar\u201d Steven Rattner, who oversaw the Obama administration\u2019s bailout of the Big Three U.S. automakers amid the 2008<\/span>–2009<\/span> financial meltdown. (El-Sayed has the endorsement of the United Auto Workers, the largest labor union in\u00a0Michigan.)<\/p>\n

The Stevens campaign has leaned into this Obama connection heavily, especially with Black voters. The airwaves have been awash with pro-Stevens ads featuring Barack and Michelle Obama. Critics say those ads are dishonest, as the former president has not endorsed Stevens in the\u00a0primary.<\/p>\n

Vincent Hutchings, a\u00a0professor of political science and Afroamerican Studies at the University of Michigan and author of Public Opinion and Democratic Accountability: How Citizens Learn About Politics<\/em>, sees this \u200b\u201c<\/span>clever but somewhat misleading\u201d identification with Obama as a\u00a0key factor driving her support with Black voters\u2009\u2014\u2009along with her name recognition and her assertion that El-Sayed didn\u2019t support Kamala Harris in 2024<\/span>. In an ad, Stevens has accused El-Sayed of referring to the Harris campaign as \u200b\u201c<\/span>nauseating.\u201d<\/p>\n

These claims require some unpacking. El-Sayed was a\u00a0supporter of the \u200b\u201c<\/span>uncommitted\u201d movement, which advocated withholding support for then-President Joe Biden in the 2024<\/span> Democratic primaries over his administration\u2019s handling of the Gaza War. It wasn\u2019t an outright refusal to vote for Biden in the general election, but an attempt to pressure him to change course on the war. As my colleague Samer Badawi reported at the time, Michigan was the nerve center of the \u200b\u201c<\/span>uncommitted\u201d\u00a0movement.<\/p>\n

But El-Sayed did endorse Harris for president when she became the nominee after Biden withdrew from the race. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Considering the dangers of the Republican nominee, &<\/span>\u00a0potential of her leadership, it\u2019s time for all of us to unite behind @KamalaHarris to defeat Trump,\u201d he wrote on social media. El-Sayed didn\u2019t call Harris herself \u200b\u201c<\/span>nauseating\u201d; he was commenting on the juxtaposition of the Harris-Walz campaign\u2019s \u200b\u201c<\/span>joyful warriors\u201d branding and the colossal destruction in\u00a0Gaza.<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Watching elders who look like your parents, children who look like your kids, be pulled in parts out of rubble for a\u00a0year, and then watching the split screen of this manufactured campaign of joy on behalf of Democrats was nauseating,\u201d El-Sayed said in a\u00a0November 2024<\/span>\u00a0conference.<\/p>\n

But such nuances are hard to convey amid the war of narratives and the rough-and-tumble of a\u00a0political campaign. The mere insinuation that El-Sayed failed to support Harris or spoke disparagingly about her could be enough to hurt him among Black Democrats. \u200b\u201c<\/span>The fact that he feels the need to defend himself on that position is an indication that he or his handlers thinks that he\u2019s weak on it,\u201d Hutchings\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

Hutchings cautions against the temptation to see a \u200b\u201c<\/span>deeper ideological message\u201d at work, as many commentators do when they posit a\u00a0supposedly broad preference among Black voters for centrist over progressive candidates\u2009\u2014\u2009citing, for example, Biden outperforming Bernie Sanders with African-American voters in the 2020<\/span> Democratic primary. \u200b\u201c<\/span>That shouldn\u2019t be interpreted as \u200b\u2018<\/span>they\u2019re embracing conservatism\u2019 or \u200b\u2018<\/span>they\u2019re rejecting progressivism.\u2019 I\u00a0think that would be a\u00a0mistake,\u201d he\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201c<\/span>Most voters are not combing the websites of the candidates to figure out where they stand on the issues,\u201d Hutchings said. \u200b\u201c<\/span>Voters are wildly inconsistent. The notion that they have some coherent ideological framework to their preferences is a\u00a0mythology\u201d\u2009\u2014\u2009one that is by no means peculiar to African Americans, he\u00a0adds.<\/p>\n

The race has taken on an increasingly bitter tone in the final stretch. Several Michiganders I\u00a0spoke with expressed deep dismay about this. One question that looms over the primary is what supporters of the respective candidates will do in the general election in November. Will Stevens supporters vote for El-Sayed against the Republican nominee, Mike Rogers (who lost to Democrat Elissa Slotkin in 2024<\/span> by fewer than 20<\/span>,000<\/span> votes)? By the same token, will El-Sayed voters vote for Stevens in November? How many will sit the election\u00a0out?<\/p>\n

Newman will vote for Stevens if El-Sayed loses Tuesday. \u200b\u201c<\/span>I\u2019m a\u00a0tactical voter,\u201d she said. Greenspon, in contrast, was\u00a0torn.<\/p>\n

He says he has \u200b\u201c<\/span>voted for the lesser evil\u201d in the past\u2009\u2014\u2009Hillary Clinton in 2016<\/span>, Biden in 2020<\/span>, Harris in 2024<\/span>\u2009\u2014\u2009but is not sure if he can do it anymore. Many El-Sayed supporters, himself included, \u200b\u201c<\/span>will be devastated\u201d if their candidate loses the primary, especially after the intensity and ugliness of the attacks on him from the Stevens campaign and the Democratic Party\u00a0establishment.<\/p>\n

This dilemma and ambivalence reflect the crossroads at which Democrats find themselves nationally. The recent victories of DSA-aligned candidates in New York, Pennsylvania and Colorado have sent the Democratic National Committee and centrists in the party into panic mode, desperate to keep this socialist wave at bay. Yet if this rising progressive tide is thwarted in Michigan, it could hurt the party\u2019s prospects in\u00a0November.<\/p>\n

El-Sayed has spoken to this. If a\u00a0business-as-usual Democrat like Stevens wins the primary, he warned officials with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee last year, \u200b\u201c<\/span>don\u2019t be surprised if you get a\u00a0repeat of 2024<\/span>\u201d\u2009\u2014\u2009when a\u00a0critical mass of Arab and Muslim voters and young progressives, indignant over Harris\u2019 equivocations on the Gaza War, sat out the election. That may have cost Harris the crucial state of\u00a0Michigan.<\/p>
