Screwworms feeding on cattle across the South, tainted vegetables spreading a\u00a0parasite causing explosive diarrhea, smoke from wildfires poisoning the air and President Donald Trump\u2019s illegal war in Iran surging gas and grocery prices. All would be enough to label summer 2026<\/span> a\u00a0time of crisis in the United States. Still, it\u2019s been made far worse by the brutal heat waves plaguing much of the country, with record-setting temperatures making spending time outside nearly unbearable for large swaths of the\u00a0population.<\/p>

It\u2019s a\u00a0trend that\u2019s been continuing for years and shows no sign of stopping: Every summer is getting hotter, longer and more intense as fossil fuel-spawned climate change warms the globe at an unbridled\u00a0rate.<\/p>\n

Now, the pace of these impacts is being accelerated by the rapid spread of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and the energy-guzzling power plants being built to fuel their usage, which Trump has been fervently working to expand. In addition to sucking up water, blaring loud noises, driving up utility bills, straining electric grids, polluting surrounding areas and generally being a\u00a0nuisance to local residents, AI data centers are having deleterious environmental effects. And facing this deluge, Americans are responding with a\u00a0clear message: \u200b\u201c<\/span>Hell\u00a0no.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0recent Gallup survey, more than 70<\/span>% of U.S. residents oppose the construction of AI data centers in their areas\u2009\u2014\u2009a figure crossing partisan lines\u2009\u2014\u2009and a\u00a0majority of those opposed say it\u2019s because of environmental concerns. After all, why would you want a\u00a0massive facility that dampens your quality of life built in your own backyard? But the concerns go beyond just personal burdens. Respondents also expressed alarm at the broader vision of how AI is being administered, with a\u00a0billionaire class dictating the terms of a\u00a0potentially life-altering new technology while working people pay the steep\u00a0price.<\/p>\n

Predictions on the future consequences of AI range from breakthroughs in research for fields like medicine, science and engineering; to the end of modern education systems; to cataclysmic job dislocation; and maybe even the development of a\u00a0conscious digital hive mind that could aim to wipe out the human race that brought it into existence, with whom it would suddenly be competing for\u00a0resources.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Whether or not we\u2019re ushering in the singularity\u2014 the moment when technology eclipses human cognitive abilities\u2009\u2014\u2009or are now creating the machines that will ultimately end our species, major AI companies like Palantir are already employing their tools in a\u00a0number of villainous enterprises: partnering with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to help surveil and kidnap immigrants; working with the Israeli government to carry out its genocide of Palestinians in Gaza; and contracting with the Pentagon to develop AI-powered weapon targeting systems that are being put to use in Iran and other theaters of war by the U.S. military. Palantir CEO Alex Karp even released a\u00a0manifesto earlier this year arguing Big Tech has a\u00a0moral obligation to defend Western countries in part by building AI weapons systems, which members of Parliament in the U.K. likened to \u200b\u201c<\/span>a parody of a\u00a0RoboCop film\u201d and \u200b\u201c<\/span>the ramblings of a\u00a0supervillain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course, there are plenty of other uses for generative AI systems such as chatbots, text drafting, software coding, health screening, virtual assistants and automated vehicles. But even when AI isn\u2019t being utilized for surveillance and warfare, the corporations building the novel machinery are still functioning in an unfettered capitalist landscape without democratic guardrails. This AI oligarchy allows tech billionaires to operate with hyperscale power as the technology reshapes the contours of modern life without any public input or regulation. While billions of dollars are being poured into the industry to help prop up the U.S. economy, AI hype is snowballing inequality while further concentrating wealth in fewer and fewer\u00a0hands.<\/p>\n

Combined with the harmful footprint of AI data centers\u2009\u2014\u2009and the potential for a\u00a0dystopian future straight out of a\u00a0Paul Verhoeven movie\u2009\u2014\u2009this antidemocratic status quo helps explain why Americans are extremely perturbed by the influence of AI on society. A\u00a0July poll from Athena Insights showed Americans are nearly three times more likely to be \u200b\u201c<\/span>very concerned\u201d or \u200b\u201c<\/span>somewhat concerned\u201d than \u200b\u201c<\/span>excited\u201d about the impacts of AI, a\u00a0disparity that was similar across political party\u00a0affiliation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The nervousness seems to be breaking through to some AI CEOs, who see the potential for blowback from a\u00a0public that increasingly fears pronouncements of AI\u2019s disruptive potential to effectively eliminate the entire human labor force. Palantir\u2019s Karp recently worried aloud on CNBC: \u200b\u201c<\/span>It starts with the billionaires. \u2026 Every single person at this table is going to be paying a\u00a0wealth tax only to punish\u00a0us.\u201d<\/p>\n

His distress is not unwarranted. A\u00a0recent poll from Impact Research shows 77<\/span>% of Americans support raising taxes on billionaires, while, according to a\u00a0poll from Verasight, more than two-thirds now favor seizing wealth back from AI companies in line with a\u00a0plan from Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) to carry out such financial\u00a0expropriation.<\/p>

Sanders has introduced a\u00a0proposal for a\u00a0sovereign wealth fund that would give Americans a\u00a050<\/span>% ownership stake in major AI companies. The plan, estimated to create an initial $7<\/span> trillion reserve, would provide direct annual payments of more than $1<\/span>,000<\/span> to U.S. residents, in addition to supplying seed funding for housing, healthcare and\u00a0education.<\/p>\n

Some critics on the Left have scrutinized aspects of this idea, arguing it could create a\u00a0perverse incentive structure wherein what\u2019s good for the public interest is ensnarled with demands for corporate profit, and that it may promote a\u00a0type of AI nationalism that does injustice to those facing the effects of the technology around the\u00a0world.<\/p>\n

Yet the core principle of making AI actually work for the people who catalyzed its development is one worth pursuing. As Sanders explained when introducing the legislation, \u200b\u201c<\/span>The foundation of AI is based on the collective knowledge of humanity and the creative work of tens of millions of people. The American people must have the ability to slow it down and make sure that AI benefits humanity, not just the richest people on the\u00a0planet.\u201d<\/p>\n

There has been plenty of clear-eyed theorizing on whether approaches ranging from nationalization to full democratization of AI could lead to a\u00a0future where we can all work less and enjoy the bounties and magnificence of our lived world. Rather than being used to bomb refugee camps or spy on our neighbors, AI could be harnessed to finally bring about shorter workweeks so we can spend our time taking in the beauty of human-crafted art, dancing at the club or cooking at barbecues with friends instead of laboring long hours on the\u00a0job.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

But as we work toward that horizon, so long as the technology is controlled by a\u00a0superrich elite, throwing a\u00a0wrench in the breakneck pace of data center construction is one clear way to channel public anger and curb the AI oligarchy\u2019s expansionist\u00a0dreams.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sanders and his fellow democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) have introduced a\u00a0bill in Congress to put a\u00a0national moratorium on building new data centers, and similar legislation is moving on the local and state levels across the country. In July, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed a\u00a0first-inthe-nation one-year pause on data center construction, following years of dedicated organizing by grassroots\u00a0activists.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Ahead of the midterms, progressive and socialist candidates have been coalescing around a\u00a0clear anti-data center message. In Michigan, newly certified Democratic nominee for Senate Abdul El-Sayed has called for public ownership of AI. Congressional contenders such as Claire Valdez in New York, Justin Pearson in Tennessee and Melat Kiros in Colorado are demanding a\u00a0pause on new data centers, and Kiros\u2019 home city of Denver recently passed its own one-year\u00a0freeze.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Kiros, whose campaign is backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), tells In These Times<\/em>, \u200b\u201c<\/span>I think it\u2019s becoming really evident where the lines are between the working people who are bearing the brunt of the consequences of these data centers and the advancement of this technology, and the people who are just making a\u00a0really fat buck as a\u00a0result of it. I\u00a0think that\u2019s also why you\u2019re seeing such unification across party lines, across all these demographics. At the bare minimum we want some kind of say over how this technology is developing, because at best it\u2019s going to completely disrupt our labor and energy economies, and at worst, you have literal Nobel laureates and researchers and CEOs of this technology saying it could lead to our extinction. The stakes couldn\u2019t be\u00a0higher.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The future of AI is still being written, and public sentiment shows a\u00a0populist message, rooted in class politics, can help turn the tide against the billionaires seeking to upend our lives to bloat their fortunes. We may be in the depths of a\u00a0crisis right now, but we still have the chance to turn it into an\u00a0opportunity.<\/p>
